Over the past week the topic of awards ceremonies was a much discussed and debated topic in my Twitter feed. This was due to Chris Wejr’s blog mention in the Vancouver Sun and his subsequent interviews on the radio.
Also this week, I came across this youtube clip of Richard Phillips Feynman, winner of Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965. He pulls no punches on how he feels of such honors. He says, "Honors are unreal...I don't like honors."
I don't know how he would feel about school awards ceremonies, but I enjoyed his opinion of such honors for adults.
This is an amazing clip - I'm going to use it with my science 9 students at the beginning of next semester. The prize is in the discovery!! That's the joy in science.

So.. when will it be that students get this idea with the honors they receive? Or is this an old idea?
ReplyDeleteJust this week a student came up to me and said that a teacher had tried to give her a "cleanliness coupon" for removing her dirty shoes but she had said no thank you. I asked her why, and she replied that it was annoying to be given a coupon for being clean. I had to smile.
ReplyDeleteDale, I love that story. It saddens me to hear that schools give students things for doing what is good. All it teaches them is to do the right thing only when there is a reward available.
